Civil Litigation

Ture o te whare whakawā

“Arguing with somebody is never pleasant, but sometimes it is useful and necessary to do so.”

Lemony Snicket, The Ersatz Elevator

Most people do not like conflict. But sometimes it is necessary. Under the law of Aotearoa New Zealand, access to courts and to alternative dispute resolution is a fundamental human right, protected by the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990.

I have worked in private practice since 2012. My experience of civil litigation includes commencing proceedings, managing discovery processes, preparing briefs of evidence, case management and appearances in courts and tribunals.

I can help you

I take a problem-solving approach to managing litigation risks. I aim to reduce litigation costs and risks by seeking resolution of disputes at the earliest possible stage and by actively considering the benefits of alternative dispute resolution. I have appeared for clients in a range of courts and tribunals and have also represented them in a large number of mediations and judicial settlement conferences.

Assisting my clients to find solutions to disputes is the most satisfying part of my job.

Every dispute is different. A bespoke approach is required for every dispute to be managed appropriately. This requires a thorough understanding of the issues, accessing all relevant information, carrying out legal research and a detailed analysis of all of the material. My approach to dispute resolution is one which seeks to empower my clients to make well-informed, strategic decisions.
